Audio Descriptions: How to Elevate Your Storytelling

In every movie or TV show, there’s a moment where something important happens without a word. It could be a hand gesture, a pause, or a facial expression. These details help tell the story, even if no one says anything out loud.

For most viewers, this feels natural. Visual media assumes the audience can see and understand these cues. But for those who are blind or have low vision, those moments can be missed.

However, for viewers who are blind or have low vision, the story is incomplete without context.

That’s where audio description comes in. It closes the gap and provides context for film enjoyers everywhere.

What is Audio Description?

Simply put, audio description is narration that describes what’s happening on screen.

It describes actions, scenery, visuals, and other key details out loud.

According to the Audio Description Project, audio descriptions are a “guide” that offers descriptions that are “crucial to understanding the creator’s intention.”

When done well, audio description strengthens the story.

What Should You Include in Audio Descriptions?

Audio descriptions should include relevant information, including:

  • All speaker names
  • Who is entering and leaving the scene
  • Expressions
  • Actions
  • Movement
  • Setting Details
  • Images such as charts or diagrams

Be sure to speak in present tense, describe the action as it happens, and also remember to use plain language.

Most importantly, match your description to the type of video you are describing. So be sure to match style, tone, and pace.

What Kinds of Audio Descriptions Are There?

There are two types of audio description: Standard vs. Extended.

First, standard fits within the natural pauses within the scene’s dialogue. This means it must be concise; audio overlap is confusing and therefore does not add information given. When there is not much detail to describe, use standard.

Use Extended Audio if there aren’t many natural spaces to add description, or there is simply a lot to describe. The video is paused to play the description.

Together, both approaches serve the same goal: making sure important details are not missed.

Why it Matters Beyond the Screen

Audio description reflects how we should think of accessibility from the beginning of projects.

When we consider accessibility through every step of the process, we create stronger outcomes for everyone.

It means clearer storytelling, more intentional design, and reaching a wider audience that can fully engage.

When people who are blind or low vision can engage with the world, and have access to the right tools, training, and opportunities, they contribute, lead, and thrive. When we design systems that are inclusive, everyone feels included.

But that means ensuring access means actively thinking about it, instead of as an afterthought.

Where This Leads

Ultimately, a world where people who are blind or low vision live without limits isn’t just about removing barriers. It’s about building experiences that don’t exclude in the first place.

Audio description is one example of what that looks like when it’s done right.

It’s a reminder that details matter. Everyone deserves the full story, not just parts of it.
