Be My Eyes Update: What’s New & How to Use It

Dark blue and white blog cover reading “Be My Eyes Update: What's New & How to Use It” with Lighthouse of Houston branding.

Since launching in 2015, Be My Eyes continues to be one of the most impactful accessibility tools available for blind and low vison (BLV) users. The most recent update makes it even more powerful. With its newest update, the app doesn’t just work better. It works more intentionally.

At its core, Be My Eyes connects blind and low vision users with volunteers and businesses through live video and AI. It’s used for everyday things most people don’t think twice about, utilizing live video and artificial intelligence in order to navigate the world around them. This includes reading labels, mail, menus, street signs, navigating unfamiliar spaces, and so much more.

What’s New

The most notable improvements focus on user experience and performance.

Clearer video for real human help.
Call-A-Volunteer video calls now stream in full 1080p HD. This means that volunteers can see finer details, respond faster, and offer better guidance. When you’re trying to read small print or navigate a tricky space, clarity matters.

Smarter AI, with fewer barriers.
Be My AI continues to evolve, with improvements that make descriptive text more accessible. In many cases, descriptions can be read aloud automatically, reducing friction and making information easier to access without additional steps.

More control over personal data.
Users can now intentionally save or share images and AI descriptions, with clearer options for what stays and what disappears. A formal 30-day retention policy gives transparency, while straightforward controls let users decide if their data is used for AI training.

Hands-free access for iOS users.
New Siri and Shortcuts integrations let users open features with simple voice commands. Less tapping means more independence.

Why This Belongs in a Bigger Conversation

Technology alone doesn’t create independence, but when it’s paired with training, community, and opportunity, it becomes a powerful tool.

At The Lighthouse of Houston, we push to create a world where everyone can realize their full potential, whether it’s re-enter the workforce, learn new skills, have new experiences, or navigate the world with newfound confidence.

Through our technology classes, programs, events, and more, we are able to support our community and work toward a world where everyone lives a life without limits.

Be Part of What Comes Next

A world where people who are blind or low vision realize their full potential doesn’t happen by accident. It takes a community that believes access should never be optional.

When you donate to The Lighthouse of Houston, you’re not just supporting our programs. You are investing in independence, confidence, and possibility. You’re helping someone turn accessible technology into real momentum in their life: a job retained, a skill mastered, a sense of freedom reclaimed.

Make a donation today and become part of the impact that empowers people who are blind or low vision to fully realize their potential.
